Our latest charity production 'A Deadly Entertainment' was staged on 12, 13 & 14 February 2009
Bourne Players murder mystery this year was entitled Deadly Entertainment. It is set at the end of the pier show in a theatre run by the unscrupulous, callous Grenville Sowerbutts. We open at the end of the first half of the show when glamorous dancers, mother and daughter Daisy and Dolores - the Dancing Diamonds - have just finished their routine and comedian Cheerful Charlie Chipps comes on to entertain us. After his act the focus turns to the star dressing room, shared by both these acts and by Milly, the tea lady.

Grenville discovers he has been robbed, and rather than call in the police, he sends for his cousin, a lady detective by the name of Tryphena Trump, a forceful character who likes to quote Latin phrases. Tryphena says the secret of her sleuthing success is 'all in the detail' and to prove her point she carries around a very large magnifying glass.
We are entertained with great song and dance numbers by all the cast, and especially by the Dancing Diamonds. As we get to know the characters, we discover that all of them have good reason to hate Grenville, and when he is found dead in the murky water below the pier, the audience have to decide who did the dirty deed.

And the audience came up 'trumps' when the play was staged on Thursday, 12th, Friday, 13th and Saturday, 14th February at the Bourne Corn Exchange. Each evening, over meals supplied by the three charities, Lives First Responders, Worth Court and The Butterfield Centre, they cogitated, deliberated and digested the clues and came up with their answers. The three nightly winners were those who had chosen correctly and had found the most clues.
The superb cast were Colin York as Grenville Sowerbutts; JJ Colvin as Cheerful Charlie Chipps; Ros Garfoot as Daisy Diamond and Cheryl Anderson as her mother Dolores; Liz Bond as Tryphena Trump and Sheri Gray as Milly.
Ros Garfoot was the choreographer and Margaret Rine directed the play. It was written by Joan Jenkin and Margaret Rine.
